First became an affirming congregation in 2002. As an Affirming Congregation, we are officially recognized by Affirm United, which is an organization of people of all sexual orientations and sexual identifies within The United Church of Canada that supports the full inclusion of the GLBTTQ community in church and society. We believe that all people are created in the image of God and are unconditionally loved by God.

Annually we participate in Pride Parade that occurs at the end of August.

Historically, First has been very active in the inclusion of GLBTTQ community.

In the 1980’s, First was a vocal and supportive voice within the United Church as the Church celebrated the inclusion of all sexual orientations.

In the 1990’s, First embarked on a discernment process that began a ministry of celebrating same-sex holy unions or covenanting services. The first service was held in November of 1992.

In 2003, First became a hub of activity as we celebrated many same sex marriages, and as a congregation was active in advocating with the government for the passage of same-sex marriage legislation.

In 2009, First was gifted with the opportunity to journey with an “trans” person training for ministry by hosting her internship.
