Our Mission and Faith
First United adopted a Mission Statement that was developed through a consultative and collective congregational process.
Our Values and Worship
We affirm and celebrate diversity. One member of our faith community wrote the following Description of First which resonates with many as we embody the full meaning of being an Affirming Congregation. In addition, we adopted a Behavioural Covenant.
In worship, we use inclusive language and encourage involvement of the whole community in presiding at services, reading scripture, leading prayers, and offering hospitality. While our services are often different from Sunday to Sunday, we do have a Typical Liturgy and we celebrate Holy Communion on the first Sunday of the month.
Our Partnership with All Saints Anglican Church Westboro
Beginning in April 2007, First United and All Saints’ Anglican Westboro began sharing one building as two separate congregations. This decision resulted from a desire by both congregations to be good stewards of all God has given, as well as the wish to strengthen capacities for ministry by sharing in programming and community outreach where possible. The partnership is guided by a Memorandum of Understanding. To learn more about our partner congregation, please visit the All Saints Website.
Our 150 Year History
In 2012, we celebrated 150 years as a faith community, a history that formally began in downtown Ottawa in 1862, moved to Centretown in 1911, before migrating to Westboro in 2007. Read a short Historical Account of our journey.
